How to find your municipality and report a pothole

Use Pothole Portal’s directory or map to find municipal evidence. To report a pothole, use the responsible road authority’s official reporting channel. Pothole Portal does not receive, forward or track pothole reports.

Find the correct municipality

Search by municipality name or code, or browse by province. The map can help identify a municipality, but its published boundary vintage may not reflect later changes. Confirm the place, province and current authority before using a contact channel.

A town name is not always the municipality’s name. Municipal names can also repeat across provinces. Check the municipal code and province on the profile before comparing records.

Use an official reporting channel

The South African Government’s provincial and local government directory links municipal contact records. Use it to find the municipality’s official website or contact details, then confirm the current fault-reporting process with that authority. Responsibility can depend on whether the road is municipal, provincial or national.

Keep the location, a safe photograph where possible and any reference number given by the authority. Avoid posting personal details in a public issue or review. This portal’s public data and audit evidence cannot establish whether a particular pothole has been reported or repaired.

Sources and definitions

Source publication dates and data coverage differ. For a municipality’s figures, check the observation period and original evidence rather than assuming this guide establishes the latest available data.
